Insects' fourth LP, “Insects,” is an album with everything. It's a record, it's a band, it's a lifestyle, and it's an even-keeled series of jabs at the corporate structures that produce and sustain much of our world. But that doesn't make it any less piercing and resilient. Sure, the music's written in a cloudy, industrial fashion that calls to mind the tender and industrial side of the genre, but those are all ways of conceiving of the music -- that's, of course, assuming it's any good.

“Insects,” is a remixed, sped-up version of Insects' original LP, “Insects”. Released on Warp, the remixed version adds a single string section and a few other pieces to the mix. While the original was far more lush-sounding, the remixed version seems like a bit of a trick, which is probably why it's only available via a limited-edition — and very nice— vinyl pressing.

The remixed version sounds like a gorgeous mix, with a lot of interesting elements, but it's hard to imagine anyone in the Insects camp being completely satisfied with the remolding. Perhaps, instead, Insects would like to see how the original sounds to a new generation of listeners. But, with the remade version of “Insects,” there's a new level of beauty to Insects' music: The music is cleaner, more coherent, and is as euphoric as it is dreamy. But, for the purposes of this review, let's just say that the remixed version of “Insects” is better than the original version.
